FILM AND NEW MEDIA

Message from the Dean

The Graduate School of Film and New Media was established in 2005 as a research hub with master’s and doctoral degree programs. Master’s degrees are offered in the Departments of Film Production, New Media, Animation, and Games and Interactive Arts, and the doctoral program in the Department of Film and New Media Studies conducts research based in both theory and practice from wide-ranging perspectives.

This Graduate School aims to continuously innovate filmic form and expression through hands-on creation. One example is the digitalization of filmmaking workflows. With the advent of digital cinema systems in cinematography, editing, sound design and even distribution, how do film production workflows and the expertise required of filmmakers change? Another is Japanese animation, which has fans around the world. How can the animation production techniques and expressive methods cultivated in the industry be integrated into the education of emerging creators in an academic setting? Furthermore, what happens when highly evolved media technologies and accumulated understanding of moving images are applied to fields as diverse as medicine, or to communication across communities? And, how can new frontiers including games be developed? This Graduate School pursues hands-on research into these and other questions, and our work has earned international acclaim.

With the development of the internet, the essentially global nature of cinematic expression has grown ever more pronounced. Within this context, this Graduate School’s educational programs undertake practice-based collaborative projects with overseas universities. Our students also have a strong presence at international competitions, earning numerous awards. Furthermore, we are impactful in cultivating creators with a global mindset through exchange programs and inviting instructors from overseas.

Artistic expression using moving images is undergoing dynamic transformations alongside advances in media technology. The environment surrounding filmic media is profoundly transforming production workflows amidst the tide of digitization, while also spurring new explorations into the very nature of visual media. Cinema was born at the end of the nineteenth century and emerged as one of the defining elements of the twentieth century. What evolution lies in store for our current century? We situate ourselves in the midst of these truly dynamic currents. The members of this Graduate School are expected to take on roles as pioneers and leaders at this hub for moving images within the wider world.
